Windows Vista Registry Tweaks

Here are some basic registry tweaks you can do on your Windows Vista.

AutoAdminLogon

With AutoAdminLogon you can set your PC that whenever a user logs on to their account they only have to use their username and not a password.

Go to this location;

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\winlogon

• Click AutoAdminLogon and set the value to 1
• Click DefaultPassword and type in your password in the value data box
• If you don't have DefaultPassword you need to create this value;
  • Click edit
  • Click new
  • Click string value
  • In the new string value rename it to DefaultPassword
• This will now set AutoAdminLogon

DontDisplayLastUsername

This is a security hack that can be useful if you regularly use a communal computer. Everytime you log off from a PC your username will remain on the login page so the next user can see who has been on it last, DontDisplayLastUsername sets it so that the last user name will not be displayed.

Go to this location;

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Policies\System

• Click on DontDisplayLastUsername
• Set the value to 1
• Done

Turn Off The System Beep

If you get annoyed hearing the beep everytime you do something then turn it off.

Go to this location;

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound

• Click on beep
• Set the value from Yes to No
• Done

Windows Mail Splash Screen

Do you want to remove the splash screen from Windows Mail, then just do this.

Go to this location;

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail

• Create a new DWORD called NoSplash
• Set the value to 1
• Done

Turn Off UAC

Some people like the UAC (User Account Control) and some don't, if you prefer not to have it then you can turn it off in the registry.

Go to this location;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

• Click on EnableLUA
• Set the value to 0
• You will need to reboot your PC for the changes to work

Speed up Flip3D

If you are one of the lucky ones with a computer powerful enough to run Vista's 3D graphics then you may want to speed them up a bit.

Go to this location;

KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\DWM

• Create a new DWORD value called Max3DWindows
• Set the value of Max3DWindows between 4 and 9
• The closer to 9 to more powerful your computer needs to be

Disable Windows Calendar

If you want to get rid of Windows Calendar then here is the tweak.

Go to this location;

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Windows

• Create a new DWORD value called TurnOffWinCal
• Set the value to 1
• Done

Speed Up Internet Explorer

Here is a cool hack that lets you download more things at once, hence speeding up your IE browser.

Go this location;

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

• Create a new DWORD called MaxConnectionsPerServer
• Enter a value of around 10
• Create another DWORD called MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
• Set this value to the same as the first
• Exit and reboot

Encrypt and Decrypt Files Easier

If you have ever tried to encrypt or decrypt files you would know that it can take a while, with this hack you can set it so that encryption and decryption can be done with just a simple right click.

Go to this location;

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced

• Create a new 32-bit DWORD
• Name it EncryptionValue
• Set the value to 1
• Quit and reboot

Change the Registered Owners Name

Just as the title says this Vista registry hack allows you to change the name of the registered owner of Vista.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion

• Right click on RegisteredOwner
• Rename the correct owners name
• Exit and reboot

Remove ToolTips

This will remove the ToolTips from showing up when you hover your mouse over something.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced

• Create a new DWORD called ShowInfoTip
• Set the value to 0
• Exit. Done

Turn on Avalon Effects

This will add some extra transition effects to your desktop, you need to have Aero enabled for this to work.

HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer

• Create a new DWORD and call it MILExplorer
• Set the value of MILExplorer to 1
• Create a new DWORD and call it MILDesktop
• Set the value of MILDesktop to 1
• Exit regedit and reboot
